Retail POS buying guide: Korona, Quantic, NRS & Square compared

Inventory depth, age verification, multi-register pricing — how the top retail POS systems stack up for real shops.

Retail POS is an inventory problem wearing a cash-register costume. The right system is the one that tracks what's on your shelves with the least friction — everything else is a feature list. Here's how the four we install most often compare.

KORONA POS — inventory-first, processor-agnostic

KORONA is the pick for serious retail inventory: purchase orders, vendor management, shelf labels, and real reporting. Pricing runs per register — Core $59, Retail $79, Plus $99 per month — and it's processor-agnostic, so your processing rate is negotiated separately (that's where we come in). With Zebra ID scanners it handles age verification for liquor and smoke shops cleanly.

Quantic — flexible and modern

Quantic covers retail and food service with a slick interface and a strong peripheral lineup (customer displays, kiosks, scales). Plans run $60/month for the first station and $50 for each additional on Pro, with Enterprise at $90/$80. It's a strong middle ground when you want modern software without enterprise pricing.

NRS — built for convenience and bodegas

National Retail Solutions registers are everywhere in convenience retail for a reason: the register ships complete — customer-facing display and scanner included — with a price book tuned for c-stores, and add-ons like NRS Pay. If you run a bodega, minimart or tobacco shop, it's the fastest route to a register that just works.

Square for Retail — simplest to start

Square's retail mode is the easiest onboarding in the business, and the free tier is real. Inventory is lighter-weight than KORONA's, but for boutiques and low-SKU shops that's often plenty. Flat-rate processing (2.6% + 10¢) is convenient early and worth re-quoting as volume grows.

Match the system to the store

Whatever you pick, don't buy peripherals from a different brand than your POS — mixed setups are the #1 cause of "my scanner stopped working" calls. Every brand page on our site lists its own certified hardware.

Compare them all on the POS Systems page, or see your industry's recommended stack under Industries.
