Ways to process: pick what fits

Every program is transparent. We'll review your statement and match or beat your effective rate.

Most popular

Dual Pricing

0% effective

Offset processing by offering a cash price and a card price. Customers who pay by card cover the fee, so card costs come off your books.

  • Effectively eliminate card fees
  • Compliant signage & receipts included
  • Card-paying customers run ~3–4%
Transparent

Interchange-Plus

Cost + flat markup

You see interchange passed through at cost plus one clear, flat markup. The most transparent traditional model for established businesses.

  • No hidden tiers
  • Great for higher volume
  • Match-or-beat your rate
Simple

Flat Rate

One simple rate

A single predictable rate per transaction. It's the easiest to understand, and great for newer or lower-volume businesses.

  • Predictable statements
  • No monthly minimums
  • Upgrade anytime

How dual pricing really works: it's a separate program from interchange or flat rate. When a customer chooses to pay the fee on card, the effective card rate is typically 3–4% depending on card mix and volume. On the full program this can eliminate your processing fees entirely. A business processing $50,000/month typically pays $1,500–$2,000 in fees, so the savings can run $18,000–$24,000 a year, replaced by a single flat monthly cost.* Businesses that see a lot of AMEX or premium rewards cards may still pay some processing unless they're on the full ~4% program. We'll model your exact mix before you decide.

* Dual pricing replaces percentage-based processing fees with a flat monthly cost. Actual savings depend on your card mix, volume, and program tier.

Pricing programs in detail

Every program, explained

Tap any program to see how it works, who it's best for, and a worked example. We'll match or beat your effective rate on any of them.

Compliance matters. We handle it.

Dual pricing, cash discount and surcharge programs are governed by card-brand rules and state laws. Set them up wrong and you risk card-network fines, chargebacks, or a frozen account. NextPay configures the right pricing, signage, receipt disclosures and legal caps so you stay compliant from day one.

Dual Pricing· most popular, ~0% effective
Every item shows a lower cash price and a slightly higher card price, side by side. Customers who pay by card cover the processing fee, so you net the cash price either way.

Worked example

$100 cash price · $103.50 card price → you keep $100 on every sale.

Best for

Retail, restaurants and service businesses that want to wipe out processing costs with clear, upfront pricing.

Do you pay per-transaction fees?

Usually none. The card price is designed to cover both parts of processing — the percentage and the cents-per-transaction (the "10¢" you see in models like interchange). On most NextPay dual-pricing products you pay nothing per swipe, just the flat monthly software fee. (Online gateways bill their own small per-transaction fee separately.)

Staying compliant

Both the cash and card prices must be clearly shown before checkout, and the card price disclosed on signage and receipts. We set up the compliant two-price display and receipt language so you're covered.
0% effectiveClear signageCard payer covers fee
Cash Discount· one posted price
You post the card price everywhere, then give customers a discount for paying cash at the register. Card payers fund the processing; cash payers save.

Worked example

Posted $103.50 · cash discount −$3.50 → cash customer pays $100; card sales cost you nothing.

Best for

Businesses that prefer a single posted price and simple signage over a two-price display.

Do you pay per-transaction fees?

Usually none. The posted card price is sized to cover the percentage and the per-transaction cents. On most programs card sales cost you nothing per swipe.

Staying compliant

The posted price must be the card price, with the cash discount applied at the register and disclosed on signage and receipts. We configure the posting and disclosures the compliant way.
Single priceSimple signageCash incentive
Surcharge· credit cards only
A compliant fee is added to credit-card transactions only (never debit), automatically capped to card-brand and state limits. Debit and cash pay the base price.

Worked example

$100 base + 3% credit surcharge → credit customer pays $103; debit & cash stay $100.

Best for

Credit-heavy or B2B merchants in states where surcharging is permitted. We keep you within the legal caps.

Do you pay per-transaction fees?

On debit, yes. Card rules make surcharges percentage-only — fixed cents can't be passed on — and debit cards can never be surcharged. So credit costs are absorbed by the capped surcharge, but you still pay standard processing (percentage + cents) on every debit sale.

Staying compliant

Surcharges apply to credit only (never debit or prepaid), are capped (commonly up to 3%), require advance card-brand notice plus clear signage and a receipt line item, and are restricted in a few states. We handle the caps, notices and disclosures so you never cross a line.
Credit onlyCapped & compliantDebit exempt
Interchange-Plus· transparent, cost + markup
The wholesale interchange set by Visa/Mastercard is passed straight through at cost, and NextPay adds one clear, flat markup. The most transparent way to process.

Worked example

On a $100 sale: interchange (e.g. 1.80% + 10¢) at cost + a flat markup (e.g. 0.30%) → you see exactly what each part costs.

Do you pay per-transaction fees?

Yes. A small per-transaction fee passes through with interchange, itemized on your statement.

Best for

Established or higher-volume merchants who want full transparency and the lowest true cost.
Cost + flat markupFully transparentGreat at volume
Flat Rate· one simple rate
One rate applies to every card sale regardless of card type, plus a small per-transaction fee. The easiest model to forecast: what you see is what you pay.

Worked example

2.6% + 10¢ on a $100 sale = $2.70, the same whether it's a debit or a rewards card.

Heads up: flat-rate providers charge different rates per channel — in person vs. online vs. keyed. Square, for example, runs ~2.6% + 15¢ in person but 2.9%+ + 30¢ online and 3.5% + 15¢ keyed. Always compare the rate for the channel you actually sell in.

Do you pay per-transaction fees?

Yes, built in. The "+ 10¢" or "+ 15¢" is part of the advertised rate on every sale — that's the trade for simplicity.

Best for

Newer or lower-volume businesses that value simplicity and predictable costs.
One ratePredictableEasy to forecast
Membership / Subscription· flat monthly, 0% markup
You pay a flat monthly membership and get interchange passed through at cost with 0% markup: just the wholesale cost plus a small per-transaction fee (typically 5–15¢). Volume makes the membership pay for itself.

Worked example

Flat $X/month + interchange at cost + a small per-transaction fee (typically 5–15¢), with no percentage markup on top.

Do you pay per-transaction fees?

Yes. A small per-transaction fee (typically 5–15¢) applies — but with 0% percentage markup, high-volume merchants come out well ahead.

Best for

High-volume merchants whose savings on markup outweigh the monthly fee.

Quick answer: do I pay a per-transaction fee?
Dual PricingUsually noneCard price covers the % and the cents on most products
Cash DiscountUsually nonePosted card price covers both parts on most products
SurchargeOn debitSurcharge is %-only and never applies to debit — debit sales still cost you standard processing
Interchange-PlusYesA small per-transaction fee, itemized on your statement
Flat RateYesBuilt into the advertised rate
MembershipYesA small per-transaction fee, with 0% percentage markup
Online gateways (FluidPay, NMI, Authorize.net…) bill their own small per-transaction fee — see Gateway pricing.
Which saves you the most?

Dual Pricing and Cash Discount take your effective processing cost closest to zero — and both are legal in all 50 states when set up correctly. Surcharge passes only the credit cost (credit cards only, never debit, capped at no more than 3% and not allowed in every state). Interchange-Plus is transparent and low, but not as cost-effective as the fee programs above. Flat Rate is the simplest to forecast but usually the priciest at higher volume. We'll look at your statement and match you to the program that keeps the most in your pocket.
