These are the real questions merchants ask before (and right after) switching to dual pricing — answered the way we answer them at install.
The big three
1. Is it legal? Yes — in all 50 states when run with proper display and receipts. It's price display, not a fee. The full rulebook.
2. Will I lose customers? The consistent experience across installs: a quiet first week, a few questions handled by a one-line script, then nothing. Two-price displays are normal now — your customers see them at the gas station every day.
3. What does it save? Whatever you currently pay in processing, minus a small program fee. At $40k/month card volume that's typically $12,000–$15,000 a year redirected. The math worked out here.
Operations
4. How do tips work? The tip is added on the amount the customer chose — card tips ride the card price. Terminals handle it; tip reporting doesn't change.
5. Refunds? Refund what was actually paid — the terminal reverses the exact transaction amount. No manual math.
6. Gift cards? Sold and redeemed at the cash price in most setups — your specialist configures the rule once and the POS applies it.
7. Online ordering and invoices? Yes — Next2Pay runs dual pricing on invoices (customer picks bank/ACH with no fee, or card at the card price), and online ordering shows card pricing. One program, every channel.
8. Do I have to reprice everything? No — the POS/terminal displays both prices from your existing price book. Menu and shelf-tag updates are recommended over time; signage covers you from day one.
Edge cases
9. Debit cards? In dual pricing, debit is a card — it gets the card price. (This is different from surcharging, where debit must never be touched.)
10. AMEX and rewards cards? Covered by the same card price. If your mix is unusually premium-heavy, the program percentage gets set accordingly — that's a setup conversation, not a surprise later.
11. B2B / large invoices? Dual pricing shines here — on a $5,000 invoice the bank-payment option saves the customer real money, so most choose it, and you keep the full amount.
12. What if a customer complains? "Happy to take cash — that's the lower price." Confident, friendly, done. Comping the ~1% who push hard costs less than the fees ever did.
Setup
13. What hardware do I need? Any modern terminal or POS we carry — PAX, Dejavoo, Valor, SkyTab, PAYS, Clover. The program is a configuration, not a device.
14. How long does setup take? Terminal file + signage + a 15-minute staff huddle — most businesses flip on a normal weekday morning.
15. Can I switch back? Yes — it's a program, not a tattoo. Merchants almost never do once the first statement lands, but interchange-plus is always there as the fallback.
